Referendum on Philippines Muslim area expansion finally

Matagal ko nang sinusuportahan ito. From the Manila Standard:

GOVERNMENT negotiators have announced a breakthrough in peace negotiations after the Moro Islamic Liberation Front conceded to adopting the government’s draft agreement on ancestral domain from where the word “freedom” has been dropped.

This paves the way for the holding next year of plebiscite in 712 villages to determine if they agree to become part of the Bangsamoro homeland under the MILF control, according to Hermogenes Esperon Jr., presidential adviser on the peace process.

pero sabi ni DJB:

Since there are only 3 million Muslims and at least 30 million non-Muslims in Mindanao, it is highly doubltful that in FREE and FAIR plebisicite, any of the above places would vote to come under the heel of the MILF warlords and politicians.

Nah, they're 20 percent of the Mindanao population Dean, according to 2000 census (and i don't expect to see a spike in those numbers anytime soon.)

(and Filipino Muslims comprise about 5% of the total Philippine population.)

John,

Sa tingin ko yan MNLF MILF at ASG ay gawa gawa lang ng Malaysia. Blowback yan ng Jabidah, Sabi nila gawin natin sa Pilipinas bago nila gawin sa atin.

Bottomline here is Sabah. Moroland will be the buffer state. How come those secessionists groups have never mentioned Sabah as an ancestral domain when its ownership by the Sultan of Jolo predates the founding of Malaysia?

Why did Malaysia drop Nur when he signed the peace treaty? Bakit biglang sumulpot at MILF at ASG?

At bakit ayaw na ayaw ng MILF na meron ibang makialam sa peace talks other than Malaysia? Ayaw nila makialam Indonesia kasi Indonesia may interes din sa Sabah or Kalimantan as the Indonesians call it.

Manila is just an enabler of local tyrants, it exercises no tyrannical control over the place.

I agree with MB "Sa tingin ko yan MNLF MILF at ASG ay gawa gawa lang ng Malaysia. Blowback yan ng Jabidah, Sabi nila gawin natin sa Pilipinas bago nila gawin sa atin."

Malaysian Muslim groups have had a "direct" hand in the Mindanao turmoil that produced MNLF-MILF-ASG and very likely still have a hand in what is going on.

And I totally agree with MB "Yan mga muslim natin naghihirap hindi dahil sa Manila. Naghihirap sila dahil sa mga warlord politicians dun. Manila is just an enabler of local tyrants, it exercises no tyrannical control over the place."

Until the late 80s/early 90s it was widely known on the French intel front that some provinces in East Coast Malaysia constituted as bases for training for Mindanao Muslim separatist groups.

I have no doubt that PM Mahathir Mohammed knew at the time what was going on -- he couldn't not have known -- Mahathir was a control freak; but must admit today I don't know to what extent these Malaysia "subversion" groups that "sponsored" those Muslim separatists in Mindano still have a direct hand in the Mindanao problem given that Malaysia ceasefire monitors led no less by a Malaysia star rank officer is already in situ (Mindanao).

Today, there are Filipino Muslims in Sabah (with Malaysian residence permits) who operate as "assets" (informers) for the Malaysian navy.

There is a couple of Malaysia big palm oil planters who have settled in Mindanao (former Sen and DILG Sec Joey Lina's law office is involved) and another one with direct link to Marina Mahathir (daughter of ex PM Mahathir) who have been interested in some properties.

(Although for the life of me, I don't understand why Marina Mahathir should be interested in a problematic Mindanao -- she's a brainy businesswoman and should know that investing in Mindanao would be very very risky... )
