McCain should "Sister Souljah" Ludacris

on calling Hillary Clinton a Bitch.

Psst. Senator McCain. Denounce Ludacris for calling Hillary a bitch. Point out that when a supporter said it down in Hilton Head last year, you said Hillary ought to be treated with respect. Do it before Obama does.

Don't bring up the "paralyzed" line referring to you. Shrug it off. Look chivalrous.

I agree.

"The Signal" (2007) a weird indie film

Just saw it kagabi. It is better if you don't read the reviews or the blurbs at the back of the dvd jacket and just watch it without any expectations. Anyway, why is the signal making everybody crazy? I thought the movie had promise as a scary movie, but the middle segment (directed by another guy as a dark comedy) was out of place. And the ending was a disappointment. Sayang.

Why McCain-Rice in 2008?

John McCain Condi Rice (source)

Why Condoleezza Rice?

Because she will excite the base. Because she will attract moderate independents and democrats. The only people who hate her are the anti-war fringes of the Democrat party and the MoveOn/Daily Kos crowd.

Because like McCain, who is running ahead of the Republican brand in favorability ratings, she too is doing better than most administration officials in likability.

Condoleezza Rice is, without question, one of the most accomplished women in the world. She is also one of the most recognizable. She has a remarkable life story that is equal to that of either nominee. And, yes, she is closely tied to a two-term President who is widely unpopular, though she has managed to maintain favorable ratings far above all other major players in the administration precisely because she is such a compelling, independent-minded individual.

It took guts and political courage for McCain to support the unpopular Surge. Now he needs it again in selecting his Vice President. Some will see this as controversial, since she's closely associated with the Bush administration, but most people (Republicans and Independents) will see this as a bold choice. An exceptional choice for VP that will blow anybody obama chooses out of the water.

Her expertise will become more apparent as the US will have to deal with Russia (and China.) And her successful efforts as Secretary of STate in improving rocky elations with European allies after the Bush 1st term cannot be just pooh poohed (hey, being able to speak five languages can't hurt.)

McCain can handle National Security, and Condi diplomacy.

McCain should announce the VEEP selection a week after Obama delivers his stadium speech at Invesco field, to negate the expected Obama bounce, and to make the Republican convention something to look forward to other than a predictable ceremony.

If Condi is selected at the convention, it will bring the house down, so to speak.

UPDATE: Sure, the condi pick is controversial because of her Bush ties. And it allows the racists and some african-americans in the democratic party an excuse to trash her and call her an "uncle tom". or bring up the rumors of her sexual orientation. if the anti-war loons in demcoratic part wants to bring up the bush impeachment or "war crimes" accusations against condi, mccain should not back down. because i think their actions will backfire on the barack obama.

UPDATE: What i'm saying is, this notion that Condi Rice is a liability to McCain because of Bush is overrated.

REad this too from BizPlusBlog on Rice.

Previous: I changed my mind on McCain's VP pick.

UPDATE: From a left perspective:

Condi Rice: Call me crazy, but to me this is the pick that has the potential to alter the contest. Her association with the Bush administration, and Bush personally, is a big negative. On the other hand, Bush already seems like yesterday's news. Where Condi could really give McCain a boost is with women. Obama currently does poorly among women over the age of 40, which is rare for a Democratic candidate.

"Red Belt" David Mamet's new Mixed-Martial Arts film

as with anything David Mamet, the film is always entertainingly unpredictable and the dialogue fresh. You gotta see this film. It has two of my favorite brit actors chiwetel ejiofor and emily mortimer.

Pinoy Martial ARts legend Danny Inosanto makes a cameo at the end as "The Professor."

SAF commandos confirm 2004 Election fraud coverup

From Ellen Tordesillas:

WHEN Gloria Macapagal Arroyo delivers her eighth State of the Nation Address at the Batasang Pambansa session hall today, she will be standing close to where, three years ago, police commandos say they replaced genuine election returns (ERs) with fake ones in ballot boxes that were being readied for a recount of the 2004 presidential election.

The ER switching at the Batasan had been talked about and reported on since 2005, when Arroyo apologized to the nation for talking to an election official while the votes were being counted, in what has since been known as the “Hello, Garci” scandal.

Recently, some of those who took part in that clandestine operation have sought legal refuge, executing affidavits and taped testimonies of their involvement. Others told friends in confidence, while a few boasted about it in drinking sessions.

They said they switched the ERs of several provinces on three occasions to reconcile these with the figures in the certificates of canvass (COCs) and statements of votes (SOVs) that were tampered with in the 2004 elections.

The stories told by some of the participants and their confidants in the Batasan operation constitute what could be grounds for another impeachment case against Arroyo.

I Change my Mind on McCain's VP pick

It's not Mitt Romney anymore. I'm rooting for Condi. Don't care about her ties to the Bush admin. Only the most hardcore lefties hate her. Republicans will be energized by this pick, and it will attract independents who are not Bush-hating Democrats.

UPDATE: The good news (coming out of the AP of all places) on Iraq will make the Rice choice easier for John McCain. Because Iraq is water under the bridge now for most people.

Marine jailed for Erap Documentary files for Habeas Corpus again

Why was the marine jailed? For possessing and passing along his CD copy of Erap's documentary re Edsa Dos to other marines.

From the inquirer:

Lawyer Harry Roque, who filed the second petition on Raymund’s behalf, pointed out that, after almost two years in detention, the military has yet to try his client.

The CD has been banned from showing by the Movies, Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB). Still, Roque said up to this date, no trial has ever been conducted.

If this kind of thing happened during the Erap administration, there would be tremendous outrage from civil rights groups and civil libertarians in this country.

17 techniques for truth suppression

17 techniques for truth suppression
By JB Baylon of Malaya

The following piece is one I picked up from the Internet. I do not remember how I found it or who wrote it, but I saved it somehow on my laptop because the topic is, well, appropriate for the Philippines. Based on these seventeen, how well do you think does the Philippine government do?

Here goes:

"Strong, credible allegations of high-level criminal activity can bring down a government. When the government lacks an effective, fact-based defense, other techniques must be employed. The success of these techniques depends heavily upon a cooperative, compliant press and a mere token opposition party.

1. Dummy up. If it's not reported, if it's not news, it didn't happen.

2. Wax indignant. This is also known as the "How dare you?" gambit.

3. Characterize the charges as "rumors" or, better yet, "wild rumors." If, in spite of the news blackout, the public is still able to learn about the suspicious facts, it can only be through "rumors." (If they tend to believe the "rumors" it must be because they are simply "paranoid" or "hysterical.")

4. Knock down straw men. Deal only with the weakest aspects of the weakest charges. Even better, create your own straw men. Make up wild rumors (or plant false stories) and give them lead play when you appear to debunk all the charges, real and fanciful alike.

5. Call the skeptics names like "conspiracy theorist," "nutcase," "ranter," "kook," "crackpot," and, of course, "rumor monger." Be sure, too, to use heavily loaded verbs and adjectives when characterizing their charges and defending the "more reasonable" government and its defenders. You must then carefully avoid fair and open debate with any of the people you have thus maligned. For insurance, set up your own "skeptics" to shoot down.

6. Impugn motives. Attempt to marginalize the critics by suggesting strongly that they are not really interested in the truth but are simply pursuing a partisan political agenda or are out to make money (compared to over-compensated adherents to the government line who, presumably, are not).

7. Invoke authority. Here the controlled press and the sham opposition can be very useful.

8. Dismiss the charges as "old news."

9. Come half-clean. This is also known as "confession and avoidance" or "taking the limited hangout route." This way, you create the impression of candor and honesty while you admit only to relatively harmless, less-than-criminal "mistakes." This stratagem often requires the embrace of a fallback position quite different from the one originally taken. With effective damage control, the fallback position need only be peddled by stooge skeptics to carefully limited markets.

10. Characterize the crimes as impossibly complex and the truth as ultimately unknowable.

11. Reason backward, using the deductive method with a vengeance. With thoroughly rigorous deduction, troublesome evidence is irrelevant. E.g. We have a completely free press. If evidence exists that the Vince Foster "suicide" note was forged, they would have reported it. They haven't reported it so there is no such evidence. Another variation on this theme involves the likelihood of a conspiracy leaker and a press who would report the leak.

12. Require the skeptics to solve the crime completely. E.g. If Foster was murdered, who did it and why?

13. Change the subject. This technique includes creating and/or publicizing distractions.

14. Lightly report incriminating facts, and then make nothing of them. This is sometimes referred to as "bump and run" reporting.

15. Baldly and brazenly lie. A favorite way of doing this is to attribute the "facts" furnished the public to a plausible-sounding, but anonymous, source.

16. Expanding further on numbers 4 and 5, have your own stooges "expose" scandals and champion popular causes. Their job is to pre-empt real opponents and to play 99-yard football. A variation is to pay rich people for the job who will pretend to spend their own money.

17. Flood the Internet with agents. This is the answer to the question, "What could possibly motivate a person to spend hour upon hour on Internet news groups defending the government and/or the press and harassing genuine critics?" Don't the authorities have defenders enough in all the newspapers, magazines, radio, and television? One would think refusing to print critical letters and screening out serious callers or dumping them from radio talk shows would be control enough, but, obviously, it is not.

Kinda like Turkey's incursions?

I remember when Turkey wanted to invade the northern part of Iraq because the Iraqi Kurds there were suspected of harboring the Kurdish separatist group PKK, which was involved in terror activities inside turkey in the past, the US was urging Turkey not to do it, because it might destabilize Iraq.

Fast forward to July 2008. Afghanistan is becoming more violent because the Al queda types who are based in the northwest frontier province of Pakistan are making more frequent attacks on Coalition forces and Afghan targets, then retreating back to their sanctuary inside Pakistan. The Afghan military and the US Coalition forces want to pursue al qaeda inside Pakistan territory (Waziristan) to destroy their bases there.

Kinda like Turkey's pursuit of PKK terror groups inside Iraq, no?

Inconsistent ang CBCP

Bakit yung mga pro-"abortion" people (which includes those who favor responsible family planning and those who want to make contraceptives more accessible to the public) lang ang dapat hindi bigyan ng communion? Why just limit yourselves to that?

(Thou shalt not steal.).

Si Gloria Arroyo ay nagnakaw ng boto na hindi para sa kanya noong 2004 elections. Bago pa diyan, inagaw niya ang pagka-presidente noong Enero 2001. Walang pinagka-iba yun sa panghu-hold up.

What Nani Perez said to Tito Guingona during a cabinet meeting

In that linked article, I think Ellen remembered wrong about the "Big Boy" part. Here's what she wrote:

This is a good time to recall the IMPSA deal. A paper trail provided by international anti-money laundering agencies traced $2 million dollars in Perez’ bank account in Switzerland. Former President Estrada alleged that the $2 million could be part of the $14 million that was also offered to him through businessman Mark Jimenez who helped broker the IMPSA deal.

Rumors about how the $14 million was divided say that a few million dollars was given “to the boys” and a hefty portion was given to the “Big Boy”.

The minimum amount involved for a person to be charged with plunder is P50 million. The $2 million is almost P100 million. Yet Perez, rumored then as Arroyo’s favorite cabinet member, was charged only with extortion.

Here's what Mark Jimenez said back in 2003, according to the Philippine Star:

Jimenez, in his privileged speech at the House last year, claimed actually releasing $14 million in kickbacks in exchange for the approval of the IMPSA power deal. The Manila lawmaker was later extradited to the United States to face charges of mail fraud and illegal campaign contribution.

The IMPSA contract was approved four days after President Arroyo assumed the presidency in January 2001.

Of the $14-million bribe, Jimenez claimed $2 million went to Perez, $1 million “for the boys” and $4 million to MalacaƱang “residents.” The remaining $7 million remains unaccounted for.
