Twelve days to the 20th anniversary of EDSA One, the EDSA People Power Commission, created in 1999 by President Estrada to “perpetuate and propagate the spirit of EDSA”, does not seem to be in the spirit of celebrating the event that has inspired other countries in the world to break free from the yoke of dictatorship through a bloodless revolution.
A member of the Commission, Chris Carrion, who is also the founder of the Spirit of Edsa Foundation, said the new chairman of the body that is tasked to initiate activities “that will expand awareness of the principles and values that the EDSA People Power stands for” is businessman Enrique Razon.
Carrion said he was the one who suggested Razon because “he has the resources”.
Carrion said he has submitted a proposed program for the four-day celebration starting Feb. 22 but it has not yet been approved. In the program, Arroyo is supposed to attend the flag-raising ceremony at the Edsa Shrine together with former President Corazon Aquino, former President Fidel Ramos and other EDSA One participants on Feb. 25.
Last January 20, Arroyo ignored the 5th anniversary of EDSA Dos that brought her to power in 2001. It’s interesting to see how she will observe Edsa One.
Heh. Enrique Razon's the owner of the pro-Arroyo paper Manila Standard.
