Atienza, another power grabber

THE PRESIDENTIAL PUPPET SHOW BEGAN AS a seminar and ended up with a mock coronation. It was supposedly a gathering to discuss something-or matters-important enough to merit a clarificatory memo from the Department of Interior and Local Government. Though an unofficial activity (because it is party-sponsored), government officials belonging to the Liberal Party were welcome to attend, at public expense. Questioned on his memo, Undersecretary Marius Corpus replied, "So what? There's nothing wrong with that." After all, as an old-time Liberal rebel once put it, "What are we in power for?" What are the modern-day Liberal rebel puppets in power for, indeed?

The somos crowd, it seems, thought that after all the effort made to hold a seminar, something spicier was in order. And so on Wednesday, they proceeded to send a text. Oddly enough, someone forwarded it to me, although I'm not an LP member. It read, "Bcoz Mar Roxas has no balls, it is time to consider new LP leaders tomorrow: Mike Defensor, LP pres; Miles Roces, exec VP; Kim Atienza, VP NCR; Jon Malaya, VP Sectors; Dan Suarez, tres [treasurer]; Eli Quinto, secretary general. Sulong pagbabago, sulong Liberal. Pls. pass-Kathy S., Kalipi." (There was, apparently, something somewhat reckless about it. Jon Malaya, for one, said he had nothing to do with it, and wasn't even one of those elected.) The result: last Thursday's boring seminar in the Manila Hotel became a spontaneous puppet rebellion.

Proclaimed by a seminar that went nuts were: Lito Atienza as party president; Michael Defensor, chair; Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya, vice chair; chief presidential legal counsel Eduardo Nachura, secretary general; Ambassador to Greece Rigoberto Tiglao, deputy secretary general. How low can you hang? Never low enough. Ask Miles Roces. So young and yet so ... full of balls.

Anyway, "Sulong Liberal!" the puppet parade proclaimed; it would declare a new set of leadership in order.
